As ankle surgery specialists in Freiburg we offer a broad range of arthroscopic and open ankle operations. From the treatment of cartilage damage and ligament injuries through to arthritic changes – our experienced surgeons use the most modern techniques to restore the function and stability of the ankle.

How does ankle surgery work?

Most ankle operations are carried out arthroscopically, that is, through small incisions using a camera and very fine instruments. These minimally invasive procedures allow precise treatment while putting little strain on the patient.

Depending on the indication, various procedures can be used: from a simple arthroscopy through ligament reconstruction or cartilage treatment to more complex procedures such as an ankle replacement or a fusion.

Rehabilitation after ankle surgery

Rehabilitation after ankle surgery is decisive for long-term success. Early mobilisation and targeted therapy are important in order to restore the movement and function of the ankle.

Phase I (weeks 1 to 6): early mobilisation

The first phase of rehabilitation concentrates on restoring movement and reducing pain. Early passive and active-assisted mobilisation exercises are important.

Phase II (weeks 7 to 12): functional training

In the second phase the strength and co-ordination of the muscles around the ankle are built up. Sport-specific exercises can be introduced slowly.

Phase III (from week 13): return to sport

In the final phase full loading is restored and the patient can return step by step to their usual activities.
