ELBOW SURGERY
- Method
- Arthroscopic or open elbow surgery
- Duration
- 60 to 120 minutes
- Recovery time
- 3 to 6 months
Elbow surgery comprises various procedures for treating conditions and injuries of the elbow joint. These include arthroscopic procedures for treating cartilage damage, tendon injuries and loose bodies, as well as open operations for complex injuries or degenerative conditions.
The elbow is a complex joint made up of three separate articulations; it is responsible for bending and straightening the arm and for rotating the forearm. Conditions can arise from overuse, from injury or from degenerative processes.
How does elbow surgery work?
In arthroscopic elbow surgery a camera and special instruments are introduced into the joint through small incisions. This minimally invasive technique allows cartilage damage to be treated, loose bodies to be removed and tendon injuries to be repaired, while putting little strain on the patient.
Open elbow surgery is carried out for complex injuries or degenerative conditions. Tendons can be reconstructed, fractures stabilised or joint replacements implanted. Rehabilitation after elbow surgery requires careful aftercare in order to restore movement and strength.
Rehabilitation after elbow surgery
Rehabilitation after elbow surgery is decisive for long-term success. Early mobilisation and targeted physiotherapy are important in order to restore the movement and strength of the elbow joint.
Phase I (weeks 1 to 4): early mobilisation
The first phase of rehabilitation concentrates on restoring movement and reducing swelling. Gentle mobilisation exercises are carried out under guidance.
Phase II (weeks 5 to 8): strengthening
The second phase comprises exercises to stabilise and strengthen the elbow joint and a step-by-step return to everyday activities.
Phase III (months 3 to 4): building up load
Phase III focuses on taking up lighter sporting activity again and on building up the muscles.
Phase IV (months 5 to 6): full integration
The final phase aims to restore full load-bearing capacity and to integrate sporting activity completely.
