SHOCKWAVE THERAPY
- Method
- Extracorporeal shockwave therapy to treat pain
- Duration
- 10 to 20 minutes per treatment
- Course of treatment
- 3 to 6 treatments at intervals of 1 to 2 weeks
Shockwave therapy is a modern, non-invasive treatment for pain and for the regeneration of tissue. Targeted shockwaves activate the body's own healing processes and relieve pain. This treatment is used successfully for a range of orthopaedic complaints.
How does shockwave therapy work?
In shockwave therapy, high-energy sound waves are directed specifically at the affected tissue. These shockwaves penetrate deep into the tissue and stimulate the body's own healing processes. The treatment improves the blood supply, reduces inflammation and activates the regeneration of tissue.
The shockwaves are applied to the skin through a special applicator and directed at the painful area. The treatment is painless or only slightly uncomfortable. The shockwaves stimulate the formation of growth factors and support the healing of damaged tissue.
The treatment is carried out as a day case and is very well tolerated. During the therapy you lie relaxed on a couch while the therapist directs the shockwaves at the affected area. The treatment itself lasts only a few minutes and is painless.
The number of treatments depends on your individual symptoms. Typically 3 to 6 treatments at intervals of 1 to 2 weeks are recommended. The effect usually sets in within a few weeks and can last several months.
What we treat
Shockwave therapy can be used successfully for a range of orthopaedic complaints. Our experienced doctors develop an individual treatment plan for every patient.
Tendon injuries
With tendon injuries and inflammation, shockwave therapy can speed up healing and improve what the tendon can cope with. Particularly effective with chronic tendon problems such as tennis elbow or Achilles tendinopathy.
Heel spur
With a heel spur, shockwave therapy can reduce the inflammation and relieve the pain. The treatment is particularly effective with chronic heel pain and plantar fasciitis.
Calcific tendinitis of the shoulder
With calcific tendinitis, shockwave therapy can break up the calcium deposits and relieve the pain. The treatment encourages the deposits to be resorbed.
Sports injuries
After sports injuries, shockwave therapy can speed up recovery and support the return to sport. The treatment encourages tissue repair and improves healing.
