Prof Dr Alexander Mehlhorn joins our medical team

First appearance at his new place of work: Prof Dr Alexander Mehlhorn at the Black Forest Ortho Summit held by Sportklinik Freiburg in July.

With Prof Dr Alexander Mehlhorn, Sportklinik Freiburg gains a recognised expert in foot and joint surgery. From 1 August, Prof Dr Mehlhorn will strengthen our medical team and add a further specialist focus to what we offer.

Prof Dr Mehlhorn has extensive experience in treating conditions and injuries of the foot and of the ankle. His surgical repertoire covers modern techniques in foot and ankle surgery – from classic forefoot surgery through to complex reconstructive procedures on the hindfoot and the ankle.

One particular focus of his work is the treatment of the diabetic foot. Here Prof Dr Mehlhorn has many years of experience with minimally invasive techniques that take pressure off the foot, prevent further damage and preserve mobility. Conditions of the forefoot such as hallux valgus or deformities of the lesser toes are also part of what he treats.

Many years of experience in Freiburg and Munich

Prof Dr Mehlhorn has been connected with this region for many years. His medical career began at the Universitätsklinikum Freiburg, the city’s university hospital, where he completed his specialist training in orthopaedics and trauma surgery and carried out research into cartilage regeneration.

He then specialised increasingly in foot and ankle surgery. For several years he worked at the centre for this field at the Schön Klinik München Harlaching, most recently as senior physician of the centre for diabetic and neuropathic foot surgery and as medical director of the wound centre.

Alongside his clinical work, Prof Dr Mehlhorn is active in research: he has published numerous specialist papers and completed his habilitation in orthopaedics and trauma surgery in 2010. In 2019 he was awarded the title of adjunct professor by the medical faculty of the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg.
